Complete Guide to Choghadiya and Panchang
What is Choghadiya Muhurat?
Choghadiya (also spelled Chaughadia or Chogadia) is a Vedic Hindu system for finding auspicious timings.
All important work should be started during favorable Choghadiya. Traditionally, Choghadiya is used for determining
travel muhurat, but due to its simplicity, it is also used for finding muhurat for other activities.
For starting any auspicious work, Amrit, Shubh, Labh, and Chal
are considered the four best Choghadiyas. The remaining three - Rog, Kaal, and Udveg
are considered inauspicious and should be avoided.
The time between sunrise and sunset is called Day Choghadiya (Din ka Choghadiya),
and the time between sunset and the next sunrise is called Night Choghadiya (Ratri ka Choghadiya).
Why is it Called Choghadiya?
In Hindu division of the day, the time between Sunrise to Sunset is divided into 30 Ghati.
For Choghadiya Muhurat, the same time duration is divided into 8 parts, which results in 8 Choghadiya Muhurat
during the daytime as well as during the night time. As each Choghadiya Muhurat approximates to 4 Ghati,
it is known as Choghadiya i.e. Choghadiya = Cho (four) + Ghadiya (Ghati).
Choghadiya Muhurat is also known as Chaturshtika Muhurat.
Understanding Each Choghadiya Type
☀️ Amrit Choghadiya
Ruled by Moon, which is usually considered a benefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is considered auspicious and marked as Amrit.
Amrit Choghadiya is considered good for all types of works and is the most favorable of all.
🪐 Shubh Choghadiya
Ruled by Jupiter, considered a benefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is considered auspicious and marked as Shubh.
Shubh Choghadiya is considered best for conducting ceremonies, especially marriage ceremonies.
📚 Labh Choghadiya
Ruled by Mercury, considered a benefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is considered auspicious and marked as Labh (gain).
Labh Choghadiya is most appropriate to start education and to acquire new skills.
✈️ Chal Choghadiya
Ruled by Venus, considered a benefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is considered auspicious and marked as Chal (Chanchal).
Due to the moving nature of Venus, Chal Choghadiya is considered most appropriate for travelling.
⚠️ Udveg Choghadiya
Ruled by Sun, considered a malefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is usually considered inauspicious and marked as Udveg (anxiety).
However, for government-related work, Udveg Choghadiya is considered good.
💰 Kaal Choghadiya
Ruled by Saturn, considered a malefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is considered inauspicious and marked as Kaal.
No auspicious work should be done during Kaal Choghadiya. However, it is recommended for activities to accumulate wealth.
⚔️ Rog Choghadiya
Ruled by Mars, considered a malefic planet in Vedic astrology.
The time under its influence is considered inauspicious and marked as Rog (disease).
No auspicious work should be done during Rog Choghadiya. However, it is recommended for war and to defeat the enemy.
How is Choghadiya Marked Good or Bad?
The first Muhurta on each weekday is ruled by the weekday lord. For example, on Sunday,
the first Choghadiya Muhurta is ruled by the Sun, followed by Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars respectively.
The last Muhurta of the daytime is also ruled by the day lord.
Hence the effect of each division, either bad or good, is marked based on the nature of the ruling planet.
In Vedic Astrology, the time period under the influence of Venus, Mercury, Moon, and Jupiter
is usually considered auspicious, while the time period under the influence of Sun, Mars, and Saturn
is usually considered inauspicious. It should be noted that bad Choghadiya can also be appropriate depending on
the desired work which needs to be accomplished.
⚠️ What if Auspicious Choghadiya Overlaps with Rahu Kaal?
It is quite possible that auspicious Choghadiya might overlap with Rahu Kaal.
Rahu Kaal is considered highly malefic. In South India, it is given utmost importance while selecting any Muhurat.
Although many authoritative works on Muhurat don't have reference to Rahu Kaal,
it is always better to abandon that auspicious Choghadiya Muhurat which overlaps with Rahu Kaal.
About Vara Vela, Kala Vela and Kala Ratri
It is believed that no auspicious work should be done during Vara Vela, Kala Vela,
and Kala Ratri. Vara Vela and Kala Vela prevail during the daytime, while Kala Ratri prevails at night.
It is believed that all Manglik (auspicious) works done during Vara Vela, Kala Vela, and Kala Ratri are not fruitful
and don't give the desired results.
While selecting Choghadiya Muhurat, the adverse time of Vara Vela, Kala Vela, and Kala Ratri should be rejected.
Understanding Panchang
Panchang (or Panchangam) is the Hindu calendar and almanac that includes five elements:
Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (auspicious combination),
Karana (half of Tithi), and Var (weekday). It's essential for determining
